Safer City Sentinel is a responder and dispatch platform that feeds the Prometheus crime-intelligence platform, operated by Safe City Solutions (Pty) Ltd, a company incorporated in the Republic of South Africa. We are the "responsible party" for personal information we determine the purpose and means of processing. Where we process data on behalf of a partner organisation, that partner is the responsible party and we act as its "operator" under written contract. The platform is used by authorised organisations — security companies, armed responders, guarding firms and Community Policing Forums. Depending on the deployment we process:
Some processing — for example POI watchlists, camera/ANPR data, and information about alleged criminal conduct — may constitute special personal information and/or information about children under POPIA. We process it only where the Act permits (including where necessary for the establishment, exercise or defence of a right or obligation in law, or for the prevention, detection and prosecution of offences), and we apply additional safeguards. Partners who contribute such data warrant that they have a lawful basis to do so.
We process personal information for crime prevention, detection and response; dispatch and coordination; situational awareness; and platform administration and security. Our lawful bases under POPIA include the protection of a legitimate interest (public safety), compliance with a legal obligation, the performance of a public-interest task, and consent where applicable.
Data is isolated per organisation — each partner sees only its own operation. We share information with authorised responder partners strictly on a need-to-know basis, with our service providers ("operators") under written contract, and with law-enforcement or regulatory authorities where lawful. We do not sell personal information, and we do not use it for third-party advertising.
We apply appropriate technical and organisational safeguards, including encryption in transit, access controls and per-organisation isolation. We keep personal information only for as long as necessary for the purposes above or as required by law. We host data in South Africa where feasible; any cross-border transfer is subject to POPIA safeguards ensuring a comparable level of protection.
Subject to POPIA you may request access to the personal information we hold about you, ask us to correct or delete it, and object to processing. To exercise these rights, contact our Information Officer below. If your information is held by us on behalf of a partner organisation, we will direct your request to that partner as the responsible party.
